Wendy Okeke
Writer, Storyteller & Poet

Grief's First Kiss is an Avalanche
Each poem feels like stepping into a memory still warm with its shadows, exploring the different faces of grief in human existence. The collection is as much about what falls apart as it is about what blooms in the aftermath, reminding us that even avalanches, in their destruction, shape new landscapes.
About Me
Wendy Okeke is a writer, poet, storyteller, and creative facilitator whose work interrogates the intricate intersections of identity, migration, and transformation. Drawing deeply from personal experience and the lived realities of those navigating fractured cultural landscapes, her writing weaves lyrical intensity with raw introspection. A graduate of the MA in Creative Writing at the University of Salford, Wendy’s work has graced esteemed publications such as Poetry Column Nigeria, the Northern School of Writing Journal, the Anti-Misogyny Club Journal, and Magpies Magazine.
Her creative practice transcends the page. Wendy is a performer whose voice has resonated on platforms like BBC, Black Country Radio Extra, Freedom Park's A Night of Poets, Purge and Penance, Classic F.M and Oroko Radio. With a rich artistic journey that spans the vibrant streets of Nigeria to international literary festivals, she continuously redefines narratives around queer African experiences. As the founder of the Motherland Poets Collective, she cultivates a nurturing space where diaspora poets connect, collaborate, and reimagine their creative identities.
Wendy challenges conventional boundaries by blending genres and embracing hybrid forms. Her work—steeped in social critique, vulnerability, and a celebration of diversity—invites readers to journey with her through a world in perpetual flux.
